The short answer

Choose ChatGPT with GPT-6 Astra if you want one general-purpose workspace for research, documents, spreadsheets, images, websites, and computer-driven tasks. Choose Claude Fable 5.1 if your hardest work is sustained coding, large-document analysis, or long-running knowledge work where clear progress updates matter.

Both are premium frontier assistants. Neither wins every task, and the better choice can change when connectors, plan limits, safety routing, review time, or a cheaper model enters the comparison.

| Decision | ChatGPT with GPT-6 Astra | Claude with Fable 5.1 |
|---|---|---|

| Best fit | Mixed professional work and computer use | Long-running coding and knowledge work |

| Standout workflow | Documents, spreadsheets, sites, browsing, and tool execution in one workspace | Multi-stage research, codebase work, and asynchronous projects |

| Context | Astra API documents a 1.05M-token context window | Product limits depend on the Claude surface and plan |

| Frontier API list price | $10 input / $50 output per 1M tokens | $10 input / $50 output per 1M tokens |

| Main caution | Critical cyber capability raises the stakes of connected access | Safeguards may reroute certain cyber or biology requests |

What “ChatGPT Astra” actually means

The model's official name is GPT-6 Astra. ChatGPT is one product through which OpenAI provides it. That distinction matters: a model benchmark does not tell you which ChatGPT tools, connectors, limits, retention settings, or confirmation controls your plan includes.

Anthropic's corresponding flagship general-access model is Claude Fable 5.1. It is available in Claude products and through the Claude API. Anthropic also offers other Claude models, so a Claude subscription is not synonymous with every response using Fable.

Research, writing, and documents

Astra is the more natural first trial when one assignment crosses formats—for example, researching a market, analyzing a spreadsheet, drafting a memo, and turning the result into a presentation or simple site. OpenAI emphasizes professional artifacts, computer use, browsing, and the ability to stay oriented while a task changes.

Fable deserves the first trial when the core deliverable is a long, carefully reasoned document or a multi-stage research project. Anthropic positions Fable 5.1 for ambitious knowledge work, large files, visual material inside PDFs, and hours-long projects with progress updates.

Those are provider positions, not a universal verdict. Test both on your own templates and score factual support, instruction adherence, editing time, citation quality, and how much of the final artifact survives review.

Coding and agent work

Both providers claim frontier coding and agent performance. Astra has a strong case for tasks that combine code with browser or computer interaction, visual checking, and other tools. Fable has a strong case for codebase-wide changes, root-cause analysis, code review, and long sessions that need to recover from failed steps.

Do not give either assistant broad credentials merely because it performed well in a demo. Begin with a disposable branch or sandbox, read-only integrations, a strict tool allowlist, token and time caps, and human approval before deployment, deletion, payment, publication, or access changes.

Price is more than the subscription

At the API level, the two flagship models share a $10-per-million-input-token and $50-per-million-output-token list price. That does not make their real cost equal. Astra applies higher rates to prompts above its documented long-context threshold and may add tool charges. Fable 5.1 has separate cache pricing, and Anthropic says its lower cache-read price can reduce some agentic workloads.

In consumer chat products, compare the plan you can actually buy: monthly fee, model access, message or compute limits, connectors, storage, research allowances, and what happens when the flagship allocation is exhausted. A cheaper assistant that needs three retries can cost more in attention than a pricier one that passes review once.

Privacy and safeguards

Treat privacy as a product-and-plan question, not a model trait. Check whether chats train models, how long content and tool data are retained, whether temporary or zero-retention modes cover the feature you use, who can administer the workspace, and what connected services keep after the run.

OpenAI classifies Astra at its Critical cybersecurity threshold and says its production products add monitoring and confirmation controls. Anthropic says Fable 5.1 uses advanced cyber and biology safeguards and may route flagged requests to less capable models. These controls can reduce risk, but they are not substitutes for least privilege, independent logs, approval gates, and a kill switch outside the assistant.

A fair seven-day comparison

Build a set of 12 real tasks: three research or writing jobs, three document or spreadsheet jobs, three coding tasks, and three connected-tool tasks. Give each assistant the same source files, instructions, permissions, time budget, and acceptance rubric.

Record first-pass acceptance, factual errors, unsupported claims, reviewer minutes, elapsed time, retries, usage limits, and consequential actions attempted. For connected work, include one deliberately ambiguous request and one unavailable dependency. The safer assistant should pause or ask for clarification rather than inventing access or forcing completion.

Verdict

ChatGPT Astra is the better default when you value a broad, multimodal workbench and expect tasks to move between research, files, visual outputs, and computer actions. Claude Fable is the sharper first choice for sustained coding, large-document reasoning, and long-running knowledge projects.

If both pass, keep the one that produces more accepted work with less review—not the one with the most impressive benchmark slide. Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT Astra the same as GPT-6 Astra?

GPT-6 Astra is the model; ChatGPT is one product that provides access to it. Available tools, limits, retention settings, and controls depend on the ChatGPT plan and workspace.

Is GPT-6 Astra better than Claude Fable 5.1?

Not for every job. Astra is a strong choice for mixed professional artifacts and computer-driven work, while Fable is especially competitive for sustained coding, document analysis, and long-running knowledge projects.

Which API is cheaper, Astra or Fable?

Their standard frontier list prices are both $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Cache rates, long-context rules, tool fees, retries, and accepted-result rates can make actual costs different.

How should I test ChatGPT Astra against Claude Fable?

Run identical representative tasks with equal source material and permissions. Compare accepted results, errors, review time, latency, retries, usage limits, and unsafe or unauthorized actions.
