Short answer

LangScribe is worth evaluating when your job is studying a recording line by line. Start with a subtitle file you already have. That lets you assess the learning workflow before spending credits on speech recognition.

Evidence and review scope

This review follows submission #670. We checked the bilingual-subtitle guide, homepage and prices and privacy policy on November 6, 2026. We did not import media, purchase credits or measure learning outcomes. Ratings are withheld; no affiliate link is configured.

Playback, study and transcription are different jobs

The guide documents paired original and translated cues, subtitle import, looping and export. Local playback does not upload the video. AI transcription, however, sends extracted audio chunks. Free subtitle translation also involves an external service. “Local-first” should not be interpreted as every feature running offline.

For procurement, decide which job you need: playing existing captions, generating a missing transcript, or practicing unfamiliar vocabulary. Buying transcription capacity does not establish that a learner will use the resulting material effectively.

Credits and billing

The homepage lists Pro at $5 monthly with 2,500 credits, Pro+ at $10 with 6,000, and a $1 top-up with 400. Transcription costs two credits per audio minute; AI translation is charged separately by line count. Unused credits are described as non-expiring, but paid subscriptions and top-ups are non-refundable. Verify checkout before paying.

As an arithmetic example, a 30-minute recording requires 60 transcription credits at that rate, before any paid translation or other AI use. An allowance expressed in transcription minutes is not an all-inclusive translated-video allowance. Estimate each stage separately.

A proposed learning pilot

Choose a two-minute recording you are permitted to use and understand well enough to check. Import a corrected subtitle file first. Try reading with both languages visible, hiding the translation, replaying a difficult line and returning to it later. Write down which actions actually help you understand the speaker.

Then request transcription for the same permitted clip if you need that feature. Inspect names, contractions, negative statements and fast speech. Compare the generated wording against the audio before saving a phrase as vocabulary. This is a suggested test, not a study we conducted.

A useful acceptance decision might be: can the learner explain three new phrases and find their original context the next day? Set your own target before the pilot. Time spent watching a player is insufficient evidence of understanding.

Privacy boundaries

The policy says signed-out library data stays in browser storage, while sign-in synchronizes library entries and subtitles to Cloudflare D1. Audio chunks for transcription go to Workers AI; free translation sends lines to Google Translate. We have not audited these controls or verified provider retention.

Use a disposable recording for evaluation. Before bringing confidential teaching or workplace material, map which actions send audio, text and metadata elsewhere. Keep an independent copy of corrected subtitles so account access is not your only recovery path.

Verdict

Consider LangScribe for deliberate bilingual study with reviewable source material. For a conversation happening now, inspect Mingle instead. Compare the tool profile and buyer matrix using your pilot notes.
