A citation is evidence only when the source exists, says what the answer claims, and is strong enough for that claim.

The short answer

Verify AI research by checking every material claim against the cited original source—not by checking that a link exists. Confirm source identity, publication date, exact support, context, authority, and whether independent evidence changes the conclusion.

The seven-step check

  1. Extract the claims. Split a polished paragraph into names, dates, numbers, quotes, causal statements, and conclusions.
  2. Open every citation. A plausible title, DOI, or URL may be fabricated, mistyped, moved, or unrelated.
  3. Confirm identity. Match author, publisher, title, date, version, and document type. A preprint is not the same as a peer-reviewed paper.
  4. Find the supporting passage. Search the source for the number or distinctive phrase. Read before and after it for definitions, caveats, and population.
  5. Match claim strength. “Associated with” does not prove “caused”; a vendor test does not prove independent superiority; one case does not establish a trend.
  6. Prefer the source closest to the fact. Use laws for legal text, filings for company facts, papers and datasets for research, and official documentation for product behavior. Add independent sources for interpretation or disputed claims.
  7. Record the audit. Save the claim, source URL, access date, supporting location, confidence, and unresolved limitation.

A traffic-light standard

Green: the primary source directly supports the claim and context. Amber: the source is secondary, ambiguous, outdated, or provider-authored; qualify the wording. Red: the source cannot be found, contradicts the claim, or does not support it; remove the claim.

NIST describes confidently false generative output as confabulation and warns about automation bias and over-reliance. Citations can make that output look more credible without making it more accurate. Verification must remain a separate act.

A reproducible prompt is not proof

Ask an AI system to provide a claim table with source, quote-sized support, date, and uncertainty. This makes auditing faster, but never ask the same model to be the final judge of its own answer. Open the sources yourself and preserve the evidence used.

Bottom line

Do not count citations; test claim-to-source fit. Publish fewer claims with visible, durable evidence rather than many impressive-looking references no reader can reproduce.
