Google Launched Gemini for Windows: What It Can Access and Who Should Install It

Google has released a native Gemini app globally for Windows 10 and 11. Pressing Alt + Space opens Gemini over the work already on screen, while a dedicated workspace supports drafting, summarization, coding help, image analysis, media generation, and—when enabled—multi-step Gemini Spark tasks and information retrieval from connected Google apps.

The app is useful for people who already rely on Gemini and Google Workspace, but it is not an offline or device-only assistant. Google requires a stable internet connection, a Google account, at least 8 GB of RAM, and 200 MB of storage. Teams should treat the launch as a new access surface for company data, not as permission to paste every active document into an assistant.

The clearest change is lower friction. The Alt + Space shortcut lets users ask for a fact check, rewrite, explanation, or idea without switching to a browser tab. The full app retains familiar Gemini functions and can pull information from services such as Gmail and Google Drive when those connections are available and authorized.

Google also promotes image generation with Nano Banana and video creation with Gemini Omni from the desktop. The launch page says additional native capabilities will arrive over time, so current functionality should not be confused with future screen control or broad operating-system automation.

Google says the app is available globally on Windows 10 and Windows 11. It requires 8 GB of memory, 200 MB of free disk space, a stable internet connection, and either a personal Google account or a work or school account whose administrator has enabled Gemini.

Those requirements matter: the desktop wrapper is convenient, but Gemini's model processing is cloud-based. Organizations that need local-only inference, air-gapped operation, or guaranteed offline access should evaluate a different product. Work and school accounts may also have plan-specific availability and different data-handling terms.

Access depends on what a user supplies and which services are connected. Google's privacy notice says Gemini Apps can process prompts, files, images, screens a user shares, generated content, device and interaction information, and information from connected apps. Google provides settings for managing connected services and saved information.

That does not mean the Windows app automatically reads every file. It does mean a convenient desktop entry point can make oversharing easier. Before rollout, administrators should test the exact account type, disable connections that are not needed, document prohibited data, and confirm retention, model-improvement, deletion, and human-review terms for the applicable plan.

Deploy it first to a small group with ordinary, reversible tasks: summarize approved documents, draft low-risk communications, explain code, or brainstorm from non-confidential inputs. Measure time saved and correction effort, then test whether connected-app retrieval respects expected permissions and returns sufficiently grounded answers.

Do not begin with payroll, health records, legal strategy, credentials, customer secrets, or unrestricted inbox and drive access. A native shortcut changes convenience, not the need for least privilege, source checking, and human approval.

Gemini for Windows makes Google's assistant materially easier to reach and gives Windows users parity with the emerging desktop-assistant pattern. It is most compelling for people already working inside Google's ecosystem.

The buying decision is less about installation and more about governance. Verify the account's data terms, connected-app scope, and administrator controls before treating the app as a standard workplace tool. Desktop-native AI is a distribution shift—not a privacy exemption or a guarantee that generated work is correct.
