The short answer
Anthropic says computer use, the Skills API, and the Files API are generally available on the Claude Platform, alongside a new browser-use tool. Together, they let developers build agents that can operate visible software, load versioned instructions and scripts, reuse documents, and return finished files.
The shift matters because production agents need more than a capable model. They need a controlled way to act, a repeatable operating procedure, and durable access to inputs and outputs. Anthropic is packaging those layers into one platform—but developers still own authorization, isolation, validation, observability, and recovery when an action goes wrong.
What each component does
Computer use lets Claude interpret screenshots and take actions such as clicking, typing, and scrolling. Anthropic says the updated tool can perform several actions per turn. The new browser-use tool also reads page structure, allowing an agent to target a field or button semantically instead of relying only on pixel coordinates.
The Skills API lets a team upload and version folders containing instructions, scripts, and templates. A claims-processing skill, for example, could encode an approved filing procedure and document format. Skills run in Anthropic's code-execution environment and load when a task calls for them.
The Files API lets an application upload a document once, refer to it by file ID in later requests, and download artifacts created by a skill or code-execution task. Anthropic's announcement cites automatic expiration, higher rate limits, and one terabyte of storage per organization.
The security boundary developers must build
General availability does not make browser automation low risk. An agent can misunderstand a page, follow malicious instructions embedded in content, select the wrong record, or take a valid action for the wrong user. Start with least-privilege accounts and allowlisted sites. Require confirmation before sending messages, changing permissions, accepting legal terms, publishing, deleting, purchasing, or moving money.
Treat skills as executable supply-chain artifacts. Review their instructions and scripts, pin versions, restrict who can publish updates, and retain an audit trail. Anthropic's documentation also warns that files are shared at the workspace level: any API key in that workspace may access uploaded files. Applications must keep file IDs server-side and enforce their own user-to-file authorization mapping.
The Files API documentation currently labels the feature as not eligible for zero data retention. Buyers with strict retention requirements should verify the live documentation and contract rather than infer that the broader platform's data policy applies identically to stored files.
A safe pilot plan
Choose one reversible workflow in a test account—for example, reading an approved intake PDF, entering draft information into a staging portal, and saving a confirmation artifact. Define success at each step, cap the number of actions, and stop when the page or expected state changes.
Measure completion rate, correction rate, time, cost, and the percentage of runs requiring intervention. Record screenshots, tool calls, skill version, file IDs, approvals, and final state without retaining prohibited content. Test adversarial page text, expired sessions, duplicate submissions, partial failures, and a user revoking permission midway.
Only move into production when the workflow is idempotent where possible, sensitive actions require approval, and an operator can understand and reverse the agent's changes.
Why this trend matters
The agent market is moving from demonstrations toward deployable infrastructure. Browser control covers software without an API; skills capture organizational procedure; files connect durable inputs and outputs. That combination can unlock valuable legacy workflows, but it also concentrates risk. The winning implementations will be the ones with the clearest permission model and evaluation harness—not the longest list of autonomous actions.
