The short answer
The top five AI tools for churches in 2026 are Claude for planning and writing, Canva for graphics and slides, Descript for sermon audio and video, Metricool for social scheduling, and ChurchPress for the church website. They cover the communications work that usually falls on one staff member or a volunteer: announcements, sermon clips, social posts, graphics and keeping the website current.
AI is for the administrative and communication load. It should not write the message God has laid on a pastor's heart, counsel a congregant or decide pastoral matters.
Where churches are today
Church use of AI is no longer fringe. A Barna survey of 442 U.S. Protestant pastors, published June 2026, found that 24% use AI to help write or edit sermons, 50% use it for brainstorming and 37% for graphic design. Most use it as a preparation partner rather than an author. Only 13% said they don't use AI at all.

1. Claude: planning and writing support
Claude is strong at the writing that surrounds ministry: turning a sermon outline into a small-group discussion guide, drafting the weekly email, writing volunteer schedules and reformatting announcements for the bulletin, the slides and the website. Its Projects feature holds your church's style notes and recurring information so you don't re-explain them each week.
Anthropic's pricing lists a free plan and Pro at $20/month ($17/month billed yearly). Anthropic's nonprofit program offers discounted Team plans to verified 501(c)(3) organizations through Goodstack; churches with 501(c)(3) recognition can check whether they qualify.
2. Canva: slides, graphics and print
Canva handles sermon-series artwork, Sunday slides, social graphics, event flyers and printed bulletins, with AI features for resizing, background removal and first-draft copy. A shared brand kit keeps volunteer-made graphics consistent.
The free plan covers most weekly needs. Canva also runs a nonprofit program that gives eligible organizations premium features. Its eligibility guidelines are worth reading closely: churches covered under a group exemption may need their own 501(c)(3) recognition to qualify. We could not load Canva's pages to verify current wording, so confirm before applying.
3. Descript: sermon audio and video
Descript lets you edit a recording by editing its transcript. Remove a false start from the text and it's gone from the video. It removes filler words, cleans up room noise with Studio Sound, adds captions and helps cut a 40-minute sermon into short clips for social media.
Descript's pricing lists a free plan, Hobbyist at $16/month billed yearly ($24 monthly) with 10 media hours, and Creator at $24/month billed yearly ($35 monthly) with 30 hours. For the full workflow, see how churches can repurpose sermons into short clips.
4. Metricool: a month of posts in one sitting
Metricool schedules posts to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok from one calendar and includes an AI caption assistant. The free plan covers one brand and 20 scheduled posts a month, which is enough for a small church's weekly rhythm. Starter begins at $20/month for unlimited publishing. The free plan does not include LinkedIn or X.
Batch a month of service reminders, sermon clips and event promotions in one session, then spend the rest of the month responding to people instead of posting.
5. ChurchPress: the church website
ChurchPress describes itself as an AI church website builder that starts from your current site: enter your web address and it proposes a redesigned homepage, then lets you make changes by chatting ("make Christmas Eve services the first thing visitors see"). Building and editing are free; publishing costs a Founders price of $97/month or $997/year, which the site says includes hosting.
A church website is often the first place a visitor checks service times. Whichever builder you use, keep service times, address, parking and kids' ministry details on the homepage and accurate. Read our ChurchPress AI website makeover spotlight for the full walkthrough.
Guardrails for ministry use
- Keep pastoral content human. Use AI for structure, research and formatting, not for the message itself or for pastoral counsel.
- Protect your people. Never paste prayer requests, counseling notes, giving records or children's information into an AI tool.
- Get permission for media. Confirm consent before posting identifiable photos or video of congregants, especially minors.
- Check every quotation. AI can misquote Scripture references and attribute quotes to the wrong source. Verify against your translation.
- Be transparent. Decide as a leadership team when your church will disclose AI use, and write it down.
How to start this week
Start with Claude and Canva on next Sunday's announcements and slides, and time it. Add Descript when you're ready to publish sermon clips, and Metricool once you have more content than time to post it.
