Figma's AI features fall into two clear categories: genuinely useful workflow accelerators that save real time for professional designers, and interesting experiments that aren't yet reliable enough for professional work.

In the first category: AI-powered asset search (finding the right component or icon by describing it), automatic layer renaming (turning "Rectangle 147" into "Hero Background Image"), and realistic content replacement (filling mockups with plausible names, addresses, and text instead of lorem ipsum). AI Features That Actually Save Time

AI Asset Search. Describe what you're looking for in plain language — "a blue primary button with rounded corners" or "a card component with an image, title, and description" — and Figma searches your team's component library, shared assets, and community resources. In a design system with hundreds of components, this saves the constant hunt through layers and pages. It's not flashy, but it's the AI feature our testing team used most frequently.

Automatic Layer Renaming. Figma's AI can intelligently rename layers — turning the inevitable mess of "Frame 847," "Rectangle 342," and "Group 129" into semantically meaningful names like "Header Navigation," "Hero Image," and "Feature Cards Grid." This matters because well-named layers make design files navigable by other team members and improve the developer handoff experience. The AI naming is accurate about 90% of the time — occasionally it misidentifies an element, but it's dramatically better than the default names and much faster than manual renaming.

Realistic Content Replacement. Instead of "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" in every text field, Figma AI can fill your mockups with realistic, contextually appropriate placeholder content — names, addresses, product descriptions, dates, email subjects, and more. However, the AI's suggestions are based on common patterns — it doesn't understand your specific product's interaction model or user expectations. The feature is more useful for designers learning Figma's prototyping capabilities than for experienced designers who know exactly what interactions they want to create.

The Bigger Picture: AI in Design Workflows

Figma's AI strategy is telling: it's not trying to replace designers with AI; it's trying to remove the friction from the design process. AI handles the mechanical, repetitive, search-and-find parts of design work — renaming layers, finding assets, filling in placeholder content — while leaving creative direction, design decisions, and craft to human designers.

This approach is more pragmatic than the 'AI will design your entire app' vision that some tools promote. After testing, we agree with Figma's bet: the highest-value AI applications in professional design are workflow accelerators, not design replacers.

For teams evaluating Figma AI: expect a 10-20% productivity improvement from the reliable AI features (asset search, layer renaming, content replacement) — meaningful in aggregate but not transformative.
