What changed?
On October 23, 2026, Anthropic announced general availability of unified chat and Cowork for Claude Enterprise. Agentic tasks run in an Anthropic-managed cloud environment and can continue after a laptop closes. The company says existing chats, connectors, skills and plugins carry over.
Controls and availability caveats
Anthropic describes isolated virtual machines, network egress disabled by default for Enterprise, role-based model access and spend controls. Efficient mode limits the experience to Sonnet and Haiku. Usage remains metered. Organizations using specified zero-retention, HIPAA-ready or customer-managed encryption configurations remain on their existing configuration. Check your organization’s rollout notice rather than assuming immediate eligibility.
What this means for a small enterprise team
Our interpretation: removing the choice between chat and an agent interface may simplify starting work, while increasing the importance of a visible boundary around execution. A request that begins as a short question can become a longer file-processing task. The useful planning unit is an approved deliverable, including its review cost.
Assign an owner to one low-impact pilot, such as an internal report built from a fictional spreadsheet. Write down what data can be read, what may be created and who approves the finished file. A familiar conversation interface should not substitute for that agreement.
A practical rollout checklist
Before enabling a group, record its current permissions and spending baseline. Ask the administrator to confirm eligibility and configuration. Choose a budget that covers a small test, then inspect the resulting artifact and actual recorded consumption.
Test an ordinary question, a file task and a request that should exceed the user’s permissions. Check whether mobile handoff preserves the same access boundary. Confirm how a user stops an unwanted task, how an owner investigates it and how the group returns to its prior workflow.
Expand only after permission checks and cost reporting are understandable to the people operating the pilot. This is our proposed rollout method, not a measured outcome of the announcement.
What remains unproven?
The announcement does not establish savings for your organization or the reliability of your particular connectors. Keep time-to-approved-output and correction work in the comparison. Follow our third-party skills review checklist and creative-agent control test before widening execution permissions.

Frequently asked questions
Is the unified experience available to every Enterprise configuration?
No. Anthropic identifies rollout exceptions; administrators should confirm eligibility for their organization.
Does unified chat make agent work free?
No. Usage remains metered, and longer tasks can consume more than a short conversation.
