What Google announced
Google's October 19 update introduces conversational analysis of BigQuery data through Connected Sheets. It says queries use the connected dataset, rather than only the cells visible in the spreadsheet. This October 27 article analyzes that announcement; we have not tested the feature.

Rollout and access
Google describes a gradual rollout of up to 15 days starting October 19. Listed access includes Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Google AI Pro and Ultra, Google AI Pro for Education, and AI Expanded Access. Users need permission to query the connected data. The announcement also describes generated plans and connected, refreshable spreadsheet objects.
Why analysts should care
Our assessment: the useful opportunity is a shorter path from an ordinary business question to an inspectable report. The important acceptance criterion is whether the report answers the intended question accurately. A polished chart can conceal a mismatched definition just as easily as a traditional spreadsheet.
Suppose a team asks for quarterly revenue by region. Write down the recognized-revenue definition, time zone, treatment of returns and source table first. These are hypothetical requirements, not Google-provided results. If the prompt leaves them unspecified, the resulting analysis may be internally consistent while answering a different question.
Validate the first question before the dashboard
Start with one aggregate that a data owner can independently reproduce. Compare totals, date boundaries, missing values and duplicate handling. Keep the reference query or approved report with the result. Treat a discrepancy as a reason to investigate the definition before adding more visualizations.
Then ask a follow-up that changes only one dimension, such as region or period. Check that the earlier filters still apply. This isolates interpretation problems and is easier to review than a large dashboard generated from a vague brief.
Refresh and permissions deserve their own checks
For any connected reporting workflow, identify who can query the source and who is allowed to see the resulting report. Do not infer that permission to open a spreadsheet authorizes every intended analysis. Ask the data owner to review the chosen sharing arrangement.
Record the source timestamp and refresh expectations on the finished report. Test a source update with fictional data or an approved sandbox. The original answer may be correct while a stale chart later misleads a reader. These are proposed evaluation steps, not verified defects in Google's feature.
Decide whether it reduces work
Measure time from question to approved answer, including clarification and checking. A faster first draft is useful only if the complete review process remains manageable. Keep expensive or sensitive source queries within your organization's existing controls and check applicable service costs separately.
Compare other approaches through the Tool Finder and document evidence requirements in the buyer selection matrix. Do not replace an established reporting process until a representative result has passed owner review.

Frequently asked questions
Does it analyze only visible spreadsheet cells?
Google says the feature queries the connected BigQuery dataset, rather than only visible spreadsheet data.
Was rollout complete on October 19?
No. Google announced a gradual rollout of up to 15 days starting that date.
Is a generated dashboard an independently verified result?
No. Check definitions, reference totals and refresh behavior before relying on it.
